Why a Wig Colour Can Look Different on Different People

Why a Wig Colour Can Look Different on Different People

Why We Don't All Suit The Same Wig Colours

When choosing a wig, it's natural to be drawn to a colour that looks beautiful on a model. Many of us assume that if we love a particular shade online, it will look exactly the same on us.

However, just like clothing and makeup, wig colours can look very different from person to person depending on factors such as skin tone, undertones, eye colour and even lighting.

In fact, the exact same wig can look completely different when worn by two different people.

This is something I learned through my own wig journey. Over time, I discovered that certain colours brightened my complexion and made me feel confident, while others left me looking washed out or simply didn't feel right for me. It wasn't because the wigs were poor quality or the colours were inaccurate — they just weren't the most flattering shades for my natural colouring.

My Own Wig Journey

When I first started wearing wigs, I assumed that if I loved a colour on the model, I would love it on myself.

Over the past couple of years, I've purchased wigs from several well-known wig companies and quickly learned that choosing a wig isn't just about finding a colour you like.

Some wigs looked beautiful online but when they arrived they really didn't suit me at all when I tried them on. Some ash blondes made me look washed out, dark brunettes felt too harsh against my complexion, and even some ombre wigs with a darker root simply didn't feel like me.

Through trial and error, I discovered that I tend to suit warmer tones such as strawberry blonde, honey blonde, soft reds and lighter brunettes.

This isn't because those colours are better. It's because they complement my skin tone and natural colouring.

It made me realise that many women beginning their wig journey may be experiencing exactly the same thing.

Understanding Cool, Warm and Neutral Undertones

One of the biggest factors that influences how a wig colour looks on you is your skin's undertone.

An undertone is the subtle colour beneath the surface of your skin. While your skin tone may become lighter or darker throughout the year, your undertone generally remains the same.

Most people fall into one of three categories:

Cool Undertones

People with cool undertones often have pink, rosy or blue tones in their skin.

Colours that frequently complement cool undertones include:

• Ash blonde
• Platinum blonde
• Cool beige blonde
• Mushroom blonde
• Cool brown shades
• Soft black tones

These shades can create a fresh, balanced look and help enhance cooler complexions.

Warm Undertones

People with warm undertones often have golden, peach or yellow tones in their skin.

Colours that frequently complement warm undertones include:

• Honey blonde
• Golden blonde
• Caramel highlights
• Warm brunette shades
• Chocolate brown
• Auburn and copper tones

These colours can add warmth, brightness and a healthy glow to the complexion.

Neutral Undertones

If you have a mixture of both cool and warm characteristics, you may have neutral undertones.

The good news is that neutral undertones can often wear a wide variety of colours successfully, giving you more flexibility when choosing a wig shade.

A Quick Reminder

These are simply guidelines, not rules.

The most important thing is how a colour makes you feel. Some people love wearing shades outside of what would traditionally suit their undertones, and confidence will always be your best accessory.

Understanding undertones simply gives you a helpful starting point when choosing a wig colour that flatters your natural features.

The Same Wig Can Look Different On Different People

One of the biggest misconceptions in the wig world is that a wig will look exactly the same on everyone who wears it.

In reality, the same wig can appear quite different from person to person, even though the colour itself has not changed.

Our skin tone, undertones, eye colour and natural colouring all influence how a shade appears when worn. A cool blonde may look bright and fresh on one person, while appearing more muted on someone with warmer undertones. Likewise, a rich brunette may create beautiful contrast on one complexion but feel too harsh on another.

This doesn't mean the wig is the wrong colour, or that it isn't beautiful. It simply means that different shades complement different people in different ways.

This is why choosing a wig isn't just about selecting a colour you love. It's about finding a shade that works in harmony with your own natural features and helps you feel your most confident.

To demonstrate this, I've used the same wig in all four images.

Lighting Makes A Difference Too

Have you ever looked in the mirror indoors and then caught your reflection outside in natural daylight, only to feel as though your hair has completely changed colour?

You're not imagining it.

Lighting can have a significant impact on how wig colours appear. The same wig may look warmer, cooler, lighter or darker depending on the environment you're viewing it in.

Natural daylight often provides the most accurate representation of colour and is often the best way to assess how a wig truly looks. Indoor lighting, however, can dramatically alter the appearance of a shade. Warm lighting may bring out golden, caramel or red tones, while cooler lighting can emphasise ashier or more muted tones.

Camera settings, phone screens and image editing can also affect how colours are displayed online. This is why a wig may sometimes appear slightly different in photographs compared to how it looks in person.

For this reason, we always recommend viewing multiple product images rather than relying on a single photograph. Looking at a wig from different angles and in different lighting conditions can provide a much more realistic impression of the colour.

When choosing a wig, remember that lighting is just one of several factors that influence how a shade appears. Combined with skin tone, undertones and natural colouring, it all contributes to the final look you see in the mirror.

Tips For Choosing Your Most Flattering Shade

Finding your most flattering wig colour doesn't have to be overwhelming. While there is always some trial and error involved, a few simple guidelines can help you make a more confident choice.

Consider Your Natural Colouring

A good starting point is to think about the hair colours that have suited you in the past. If you've always received compliments when wearing warm blonde shades, for example, there is a good chance similar tones will continue to flatter you.

Think About Your Undertones

As we've discussed, cool, warm and neutral undertones can influence how a colour appears against your skin. Choosing shades that complement your undertones can help create a more balanced and natural look.

Start Close To Your Natural Shade

If you're new to wigs, it can be helpful to begin with a colour that is similar to your natural hair colour before experimenting with more dramatic changes.

Don't Be Afraid To Experiment

Sometimes the colours we least expect to suit us become our favourites. Wigs offer a wonderful opportunity to try new shades without making a permanent commitment.

Look At Multiple Photos

Always view several images of a wig before purchasing. Different angles and lighting conditions can give you a much better understanding of how a colour looks in real life.

Once your wig arrives, don't be afraid to take photographs of yourself wearing it. Many wig wearers find that seeing themselves in a new colour or style takes a little time to adjust to. Looking at photos can help you view the wig more objectively and appreciate how it looks from different angles.

Personally, I have hundreds of photos of myself wearing different wigs. Some were taken indoors, others outside in natural daylight, on bright sunny days and on cloudy days. One thing I've learned is that the same wig can appear surprisingly different depending on the lighting and environment.

It's also worth trying your wig in natural daylight, indoors and with different outfits. Sometimes a shade that feels unfamiliar at first can quickly become a favourite once you become accustomed to seeing yourself in a new look.

Remember, you're not just adjusting to a new wig – you're adjusting to seeing yourself with a different colour, style and overall appearance. Giving yourself a little time to get used to the change can make all the difference.

Remember That Confidence Matters Most

While colour theory and undertones can be helpful guides, there are no strict rules. The best wig colour is the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident and like the best version of yourself.

Choosing a wig is a personal journey, and what suits one person may not suit another. Take your time, trust your instincts and enjoy discovering the colours that make you feel amazing.
